What is GEO — and why will it matter for your business?

A practical introduction to generative engine optimisation: what changes with AI search, what stays familiar, and where to start without chasing shortcuts.

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It is a term used for work intended to improve a business’s visibility in AI-generated search experiences. The useful question is not whether your website has an “AI-ready” badge. It is whether someone researching your services can find clear, reliable information about what you actually do.

A different way to discover a business

An AI search experience can bring information from several sources into one response, sometimes with links to supporting pages. A prospective customer might ask a detailed question, compare approaches, then follow a source to investigate further. That does not make your website redundant: it makes the information on it important beyond its homepage.

Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as features rooted in its existing Search systems. Other providers use different systems and controls. A tactic that applies to one is not automatically a rule for all of them.

GEO is not a replacement for SEO

Google’s guidance says foundational SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features. Accessible, crawlable pages, helpful content, internal links and a good user experience still matter. There is no special AI schema or text file that guarantees inclusion.

Treat GEO as a lens for reviewing the quality and discoverability of your information, not as a promise of an AI recommendation. Even an eligible, well-built page may not be indexed or selected as a source. Responses can vary by question, context and system.

Start with the questions customers actually ask

For a service business, a useful first review is simple:

  • Can a visitor understand what you offer, who it is for and where you operate?
  • Do you explain the process, limitations and what happens next?
  • Are factual claims backed by evidence you have permission to share?
  • Can visitors reach important service pages through normal links?
  • Are contact and business details accurate and consistent?

Write answers from your own expertise. Do not manufacture case studies or publish dozens of near-identical pages for imagined prompts. A clear explanation of a real customer decision is more useful than a paragraph stuffed with new acronyms.

Measure outcomes, not isolated screenshots

A screenshot of one AI response is an observation, not proof of sustained visibility. Keep a dated record of any checks and their limitations. Review available search reporting alongside qualified enquiries and the questions prospects ask. Use optional analytics only with the appropriate controls and permissions.

The aim is to help the right people understand your business, wherever discovery begins. Our SEO + GEO approach connects that work to the website itself. If you are reviewing the wider journey, explore how we work.
